TASOSS SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATION
The Silver Jubilee Celebration started with thanks giving concelebrated High Mass at 4.30 p.m. on 4.5.2004 presided over by Most Rev. Dr. Peter Fernando, Archbishop of Madurai with hundreds of participants attending the mass. Rt. Rev. Dr. Neethinathan, Bishop of Chengleut gave the sermon. Following the Mass,the public function started at 6.00 p.m. Rt. Rev. Dr. Singarayar; Bishop of Salem presided over the function. Rt. Rev. Dr. Peter Remigius, Bishop of Kumbakonam and President of TASOSS welcomed the gathering. The gathering included one Archbishop 4 Bishops, present and former Directors of TASOSS and DSSSs, Priests, Religious, Peoples leaders and others numbering over 800 in all.
The President of TASOSS, in his welcome address, said that TASOSS was formed on 4.5.1979 as an official organization of TNBC for Justice, Peace and Development with a vision of establishing a Kingdom of God on earth where people of all faiths can livetogether in peace, harmony, love, brotherhood, equality, tolerance and mutual respect for one another.
He told that this was the first Regional Forum formed in India as a Regional Resource Centre for training with research, evaluation, documentation and consultancy on human development to promote peoples organization and build up a strong peoples movement at regional level to empower them.
The Silver Jubilee Souvenir was released by Rt. Rev. Dr. Antony Devotta, Bishop of Trichy and received by Fr. T. L. Sundara Raj, the former Director of TASOSS. A special key chain bearing the logo of TASOSS was also released by Most Rev. Dr.Peter Fernando and received by the former Vice President of TASOSS Fr. S. Kulandaisamy.
Special invitees including a Chennai High /court judge Justice Packiaraj, the Asst. Executive Director of Caritas India Rev. Fr. Varghese Mattamana, Fr. A. Victor Mariasusai, Former Director of TASOSS, Women, Agricultural landless labourers, and Fish workers federation leaders offered felicitation speeches, eulogizing the Directors and staff of both TASOSS and DSSSs for the valuable service being rendered by them to uplift the marginalized society.
One of the former Directors of TASOSS Fr. A. Michael honoured the staff of TASOSS by presenting shawls and gifts to them.
The Director of TASOSS Fr. A. Joseph Selvaraj presented a report on the activities of TASOSS. In his report he said that TASOSS has taken up a unique programme called New Thrust in whole of India in which all 22 DSSS Directors of Tamilnadu and Pondicherry are wholly involved as a single entity in federating peoples groups and bringing them under one umbrella called Regional Movement through common programme, common planning and common funding with the cooperation and partnership of MISEREOR / CORD AID.
The Asst. Executive Director of Caritas India Fr. Varghese in his felicitation speech said that TASOSS was formed out of necessity as a coordinating body following a major catastrophe caused due to severe cyclone and flood in Feb. 1979 in Tamilnadu to monitor and the coordinate the rehabilitation and relief activities of all DSSSs inTamilnadu and Pondicherry and then Director of Kottar DSSS who is none other than the President of TASOSS and Bishop of Kumbakonam Rt. Rev. Dr. Peter Remigius took the lead and initiative in forming TASOSS. He also highly appreciated the works of the Director and staff of TASOSS in promoting and strengthening people's federations. The three federation leaders (Women, Agricultural and Fish workers) unanimously accepted that TASOSS had played a major role in imparting training to the grass root people in creating awareness and leadership qualities in them and making them become strong and fearless in arguing and bargaining for and demanding their basic rights and facilities from the Government.
Rt. Rev. Dr. Singarayar in his presidential address said that TASOSS, for the past 25 years had involved itself heart and soul in creating awareness among the grass roots through various training programmes and organizing them together as a formidable structure of people's movement. He further said that TASOSS born out of compulsion following the severe drought in 1978 and catastrophic flood and cyclone in 1979, had grown to this present stature as a model regional forum in whole of India through its sustained and tireless activities for the promotion of peoples in the past 25 years and it deserved commendation.
Two cultural programmes depicting the past activities of TASOSS and future direction of TASOSS were enacted which captivated the hearts of one and all. The function went on for 2 hours starting at 6.00 p.m. and ending at 8.00 p.m.
The celebration came to an end at 8.00 p.m. with vote of thanks followed by National Anthem.
