being the Regional organization and official body of Tamil Nadu Bishops' Council (TNBC) for social concern, is mandated to promote the values of Justice, Peace and Development through its words and deeds. Being the Executive Director of TASOSS, I have to apprise the general public its programmes and activities in a simple and understandable manner. I am very much pleased to inform that TASOSS together with its 24 member societies (DSSSs) functioning in Tamilnadu and Pondicherry continues to work with the marginalized with the noble aim of building self reliant and self sustained peoples' organizations for social transformation. This is primarily aimed at organizing the unorganized and empowering the powerless. The grassroots communities have promoted 14629 people's groups under the guidance and facilitation of TASOSS and DSSSs. With an avowed objective of bringing the entire grass root groups under one umbrella called "Regional peoples' organization", people's movement has been strategically planned by TASOSS.
It has been widely accredited that the Tamilnadu is the only Region in whole of India or even in the whole world for having successfully launched the unique New thrust programme through Promotion of self reliant and self-sustaining people's organizations at different levels. NGOs all over the whole world look at Tamilnadu as a model regional forum in building up people's movement towards establishing a dignified human society where there will be justice, peace, harmony and equality.
The unprecedented Tsunami of 26 December 2004 took the Tamilnadu and Pondicherry coastal people by surprise and devastated their habitations and livelihoods. The death toll of Tsunami was as high as 12087 and it left 72077 people homeless. TASOSS pressed the Diocesan Social Service Societies into immediate relief and rehabilitation services and drew the attention and support of partner agencies that extended their generous gestures of financial and technical support. TASOSS continues to coordinate the programmes of the DSSSs and the partner agencies towards rebuilding the affected communities in the coastal villages of Tamilnadu and Pondicherry. It is my strong belief that this web site will help those who are committed to the cause of the marginalized.
Looking forward to hearing your valuable and constructive comments on the contents of this web site
